How to Prepare Australian Style Sausage Rolls?

There are three things that can’t be missed in an Australian party: good food, good drinks and good music. If you ever go to a party in Australia, you’ll surely find trays full of delicious snacks. But, there’s a snack so popular among Australians that it has certainly become a local classic.

We’re talking about Australian sausage rolls. These small delicacies stuffed with soft and juicy deliciousness can’t be missed in the special moments of any Australian. Not finding them at a party would be as unlikely as not finding beer at a Sunday’s BBQ party.

In Australia there are many variations of this popular snack. They can be stuffed with beef, pork, chicken or turkey. But, if you want to taste something out of this world, try those ones stuffed with the award winning Perth ham.

Without a doubt, Australian sausage rolls are as popular as the meat platter. Best of all, they’re very easy to prepare and you can find the ingredients in any supermarket. So, you don't need to visit Australia to bite one of these. You can even order your own award winning Perth ham on the Internet directly from Australia.

So, you have no excuses. Today, we'll show you how to prepare sausage rolls following the Australian way.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup parsley

  • ½ garlic clove

  • 375 g pastry sheets

  • 400 g sausage meat

  • 1 egg

Procedure

First of all, visit your local butcher shop and ask your trusted butcher to prepare the best sausage  Perth meat. It all depends on your own taste. You can choose a specific meat or a mixture of different meats.

Finally, when you have the sausage meat, it's time to work with the rest of the ingredients. Use a mortar to prepare a fine paste with garlic and a pinch of salt. Then, finely chop the parsley leaves and add them to the paste.

Using a food processor, mix the sausage meat with the garlic, parsley and salt mixture. Set the food processor at a high speed, so the sausage meat and the rest of ingredients form a homogeneous paste.

After that, cut the pastry sheets into small triangles. Then, place a small sausage filling ball over the pastry triangle. Then, form small rolls, covering the filling, but leaving the side edges open. Place the rolls on a baking tray.

Beat an egg in a bowl. Then, spread the beaten egg on each roll with a cooking brush.

Finally, insert the tray in a preheated oven at 180º C. Let the rolls cook for 25-30 minutes. Remove the rolls from the oven when they’re perfectly golden.

Additional cooking tips

You can prepare your rolls and then reserve them in the freezer for special moments. With good refrigeration, they can last months in the freezer without problems. However, it’s convenient to cover them well with plastic wrap to avoid any air passage. If you don't, the rolls will taste bad when you cook them.

If you’re organizing a party, you can complement your snack table with a big Perth meat platter with all kinds of cheese, sausages and cured meat. But, if not all guests are meat lovers, you could include some vegan snacks, like hummus and falafel.
