What are the different types of reconstructive surgeries?

Reconstructive surgery includes a variety of procedures that are performed to repair damaged tissue and organs to restore their shape and functions. Causes of tissue damage can range from birth defects, developmental abnormalities or traumatic injuries to severe burns, infections, tumors or any other disease.

The common types of reconstructive surgeries are:

1. Breast reconstruction: Implant-based reconstruction by using breast implants and Flap reconstruction by using the patient’s own tissue from another part of the body.


2. Breast Reduction: Removes excess breast fat, tissue and skin from men and women both


3. Hand or Foot Surgery:  These surgeries can treat diseases that cause pain and impair strength, function and flexibility in the wrists and fingers.


4. Regenerative Medicine: Science of replacing, engineering or regenerating human cells, tissues or organs to restore normal function.


5. Microsurgery or flap procedures: A flap of tissue is detached from the original site and reattached to a new site


6. Cleft lip and cleft palate: Flap of tissue is created on both side of the cleft.


7. Tissue expansion: Procedure that helps the body grow extra skin by stretching surrounding tissue


8. Skin Cancer Removal: Cancerous or other skin lesions are removed using specialized techniques by surgeons.


9. Scar Revision: Minimize the appearance of a scar on the body

What are the defects which can be treated with reconstructive surgery? 

Reconstructive surgery besides repairing the damaged tissues and organs in various conditions has been extensively used for treating various congenital anomalies. A congenital anomaly is a condition present at or from birth time due to which it significantly deviates from the normal structure or function of the body.

This deviation may be caused due to hereditary or genetic disorder, developmental disability or disease. Common congenital anomalies treated with reconstructive surgery include:

1. Bell’s palsy - Facial Paralysis, inability to control the facial muscles on the affected side


2. Cleft lip and cleft palate - birth defect when the baby's lip or mouth does not form properly during pregnancy.


3. Facial clefts – when mouth and face do not fuse together properly during the first few months of pregnancy, cleft lip and/or cleft palate occur.


4. Cleft hand – is a rare congenital birth defect in which the hand did not develop properly during fetal development and child may be born with missing one or more fingers.


5. Ear deformations or malformations – means infants are born with an irregular ear shape i.e. Congenital Auricular Deformity. There can be Auricular Malformation with no missing tissue but an abnormally shaped ear or Microtia in which external ears are not fully developed.


6. Congenital breast reconstruction – like Poland syndrome, caused due to chest wall deformity and absent or hypoplastic pectoralis muscle and breast.

It can be treated using both implant and autologous reconstructive techniques ranging from chest wall stabilization or augmentation, dynamic muscle transfer, nipple and areola repositioning, and breast augmentation using prosthesis or autologous tissue transfer.
