Sydney has something that other capitals simply cannot match, it's location.
10 hours north of Sydney is the Gold Coast, 10 hours south of the city is Melbourne, and 2 hours away is the nation's capital, Canberra.
For those who champion Melbourne or Brisbane as superior destinations, it is indisputable that Sydney is the only city that is equal distance between both of these. This makes Sydney an ideal destination from which to explore other cities.
Reason 2: Climate
As with other eastern coast cities, Sydney has a green, lush climate. But, what sets Sydney as superior to other cities is that it's a warm temperate climate, whilst humid, offers great seasonal variations without being either too hot or too cold. Melbourne, for instance, has long cool winters, which are characterized by drizzly rain and bone chilling winds. Brisbane, on the other hand, has tropical heat that offers little respite except in the deepest days of winter. Sydney, on the other hand, averages less than 30 degrees in summer, and above 16 degrees in winter. No other city in Australia offers the same degree of comfort.

Melbourne and Sydney are without a doubt the most culturally diverse capitals in Australia. However, Sydney edges Melbourne by being more iconic. Melbourne cannot rival the Opera House or the street festivals that attract vast crowds each year. Melbourne excels in the refined arts, whilst Sydney has this PLUS a vibrancy all of it's own.
Sydney is not just somewhere that appeals to tourists. Take a drive in the city and inner east, and you'll notice vast development. The reason for this? The city's popularity as a destination for young Australians. In many ways, Sydney is like the Australian version of New York, and ever expanding skyline of high rise apartments and congested traffic that are symptoms of the popularity of this cultural and business Australian hub.
