Checklist and Tips for Bond Cleaning

Ahhh yes, that time of life… the lease is ending, you’re moving somewhere new, and got a lot of things to do before that new stage of your life can officially commence. This can invoke a number of different emotions, but regardless of how you feel, a proper move out cleaning Sydney or end of lease cleaning Sydney of the property you are renting is something that must be done! This article will provide a step-by-step of sorts to do before you hand the keys over to the property owner or manager.

The lease agreement may come with a number of different clauses, articles, statements, and notices that must be conformed to in order for the renter to receive their bond back. Most of these clauses will pertain to the state of the property—how it is now versus its original condition. It is therefore the renter’s responsibility to ensure that the property is as close to its original condition as is feasibly possible. Provided below is a rough checklist to follow when revising the property.

What to Do Before You Exit:

Any carpets that came with the property will need to be maintained or restored in the event some stains have accrued. Cleaning a carpet however requires certain chemicals that are not always at the disposal of your average consumer—or, the consumers do not do a sufficient job at restoring the carpets to their original condition. It is often best to opt for having carpets professionally cleaned before vacating a property. Booking a professional carpet cleaner is easy to do and only requires a simple good search with your area embedded into the search. Be sure to have this done the same day or the day before the landlord or property manager arrives, so that the carpets remain as pristine as possible—and never forget to retain a copy of the invoice or receipt for the service you purchased!

The same holds true for any pest-control service that may be required in case you have any pets, which, if you do, is a service that will certainly need to be enlisted! Tenets, after all, are responsible for ensuring the property remains pest-free!

If the property you have been renting has a lawn or external gardening area, this will also need to be cleaned up—mowing and garden maintenance should be done a couple weeks before presenting the property to the landlord to make sure any exterior areas do not look unkempt. Another thing that might be considered, if it is your responsibility and not the property manager’s, is canceling any utility bills a month prior to handing over the keys—this ensures you do not accrue any extra or unwarranted fees once you have left the property!

You will want to ensure that any external areas are ready to be presented, that they have been maintained and look tidy. This will also include cleaning up any backdoor or side entrances to the property, especially if the property has a garage. Try to remove any cobwebs, dust, and potential mold spots from such areas, as it is in areas like these where such nasty particles tend to congregate. If you smoke it is also important to remove any stains, traces, smells, or spots accumulated on the property from the habit. Be sure to check, clean, and replace (if needed) any electrical components of the house, hardware, lighting, or anything of the sort—this includes things like fan blades, which tend to gather dust and will need to be wiped. Other sections and elements of the inside of your rental property will need to be cleaned, including curtains, air conditioners, or toilets (well the entire bathroom in general).

A deep cleaning of the property may require additional steps to ensure it is ready to be presented to the original owner or next renter, before your exit. Be sure to check out our article on “How to: Bond Cleaning”, for more information on the topic!
