Alluring Scholarships for International Students in Canada

The education system of Canada is globally recognized because of its industry-oriented curriculum, hi-tech mode of learning, high faculty to student ratio and other aspects. Seven universities in Canada rank among the top 200 in the world as per the QS World Ranking report. Canadian universities and colleges offer a broad spectrum of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Three Canadian cities namely, Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary are recognized as the top 10 ‘Most Liveable Cities’ in the world. The other two cities considered as the industrial center of the country are Ontario and Quebec. They are the most popular cities for higher studies among international students. These countries alone contribute 80% of the overall GDP.

Did you know, around 572,415 international students enrolled for higher studies in Canada in 2018? Canadian universities offer high-quality education at a relatively lower tuition fee than the universities of USA and UK. The annual cost of study in Canada for international students for an undergraduate program varies from CA$14,000 to CA$ 26,000 and for a postgraduate program it ranges from CA$ 14,000 to CA$ 24,000 per year. For many, it is not possible to afford the tuition fee along with the living expenses. Nonetheless, international students pursuing higher education are benefitted a lot through various scholarships.

Some of the scholarships are ‘Aga Khan Academy Renewable Scholarship’ and ‘International Entrance Scholarships’ offered by the University of Victoria to academically outshining students for UG courses.

The University of Guelph facilitates a scholarship scheme called ‘Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development’ (SEED) for students coming from ASEAN countries. The amount offered at an undergraduate and postgraduate level under this scheme ranges from CAD 10,200 to CAD 15,900 depending upon the academic tenure.

A list of some other scholarships for international students in Canada are-

  • Entrance Scholarships
  • ‘University of Regina International Entrance Scholarship’ provided by the University of Regina as an award of $200,000 annually to the undergraduate students.
  • International Academic Excellence Award
  • ‘Mathematics International Elite Awards’ and ‘Mathematics International Excellence Awards’ offered by the University of Waterloo exclusively to the Indian students pursuing masters in Mathematics.
  • ‘International Master's and Doctoral Student Awards’ is offered to international graduate students, again by the University of Waterloo.
  • NYIT Scholarships is provided by the New York Institute of Technology to scholars.

  • Students need not apply separately for scholarships. The application of admission is automatically screened for the scholarships based on the eligibility criteria.

International students can also manage expenditures by working part-time and joining internship programs. You can choose to do co-ops and internships. Co-ops are mostly paid and fulltime for a longer duration. Not all internships are paid but some help you earn academic credits. Internships are a good way to get trained on industry-oriented projects which is an add on to your resume.
