Everything You Need to Know About Laser Skin Treatments

Laser skin treatment, also known as laser skin resurfacing, is a procedure that makes use of lasers to improve skin irregularities and blemishes. This technique directs short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin, precisely removing skin layer by layer. Here, the epidermis, or the skin's outer layer, is removed. At the same time, the dermis, which is the layer of the skin underneath the surface, is heated, stimulating the skin cells to produce elastin and collagen fibers.

Laser skin treatment is a proven way to help reduce wrinkles, age spot, acne scars and other blemishes. The new skin cells that are formed, give the skin a tighter and younger looking surface. The procedure can be performed alone or with other cosmetic surgeries on the face.

Autumn is considered the laser season. This is because laser- treated skin is hypersensitive to sun exposure for up to a year following some procedures, therefore many cosmetic surgeons recommend undergoing laser resurfacing during fall or winter months, when daytime hours are shorter and people spend most of their time indoors.

Several types of lasers are used in laser skin treatments. The broad two categories are:

Ablative Lasers: In this procedure, an intense wavelength of light is ejected into the skin, which removes the outer layers of the aged or sun damaged skin. Laser stimulates the underlying skin, resulting in collagen formation and an improvement in wrinkles. After this laser skin treatment, an ointment and dressing is applied to the skin. Ablative Lasers are of two types: Carbon Dioxide Laser and Erbium Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet.

Non-Ablative Laser: Unlike ablative technologies that heat and remove the top skin tissue, non-ablative (or non-wounding) laser skin treatments work beneath the surface skin layer. It stimulates collagen growth and tightens the underlying skin to improve the skin tone. The therapy also removes fine lines and mild to moderate skin damage. Non-Ablative Laser-based treatments are of the following types: Pulsed Dye Laser, Nd: Yag Laser, Alexandrite Laser.

  • Certain light-based treatments are also used to cure skin problems. They are not exactly laser skin treatments, but are similar to them in terms of purpose, procedures and results. Some of them are:

  1. Intensed Pulsed Light

  2. Pearl by Cutera

  3. Photo Facial

  4. Portrait

  5. Pulsed Dye Lasers

  6. Radiofrequency

  7. Ultrasound Imaging

The advancement in technology has led to the emergence of a variety of lasers that tackle different skin problems and skin types. The reason there are so many options is that no one laser can treat all patients and all skin concerns. With a wide range of laser skin treatments available in the market, it is difficult to zero in on the one that ensures credibility as per individual concerns. Hence, it is very important to consult an experienced dermatologist in order to foray into a treatment that is tailor-made for one’s skin!
