Distractions and Problems of Cell Phones

Scientific and technical progress that has reached a huge level of success by the end of the twenties century, became the reason of inventing such a wonderful thing as mobile phone. Is this thing as important as we consider it to be? Certainly, invention of mobile phone and other modern technologies served as a crucial moment in development of all spheres of life, but the invention of such a device has its drawbacks, as well.
Ten years ago if the person were to think that everyone and their mother would have a cell phone, then they would have been looked at as though they were crazy. Nowadays, mobile phones have become an integral part of our lives. We use the phone every day, it is a common thing. Calling, sending files or chatting on the internet has become very easy. Now people are dependent on the mobile phones. For some of them, the mobile phone is a form of connection with the outside world, while others take it for the feeling of safety. We simply cannot leave our home without this little thing. Mobile phone has brought convenience to our lives, as well as a false sense of security. Most people who accidentally went out without a mobile phone feel like having “no hands” or important detail of their clothes - in short, uncomfortable.
Phone industry is developing incredibly fast today. There are so many smartphones with amazing features that the market is flooded with the latest models. While many prefer turning a blind eye to any danger caused by using a cell phone, scholars, indeed, have found that too frequent use of mobile phones can be harmful for people’s health.
Let us just take a look at some of them, so that those simple words could show the real danger provided by cell phones. The thing is that human’s brain absorbs a significant portion of the electromagnetic energy emitted by phone in order to connect to the base station of communication. The experts in the field of radiobiology explain that the brain in this case serves as a part of the antenna. Such radiation used to be dangerous only for the professionals involved in special equipment, devices and radio equipment, however, the working conditions they had were special, including strict medical examination and safety equipment. Today, people either have not heard about this sort of information before, or just do not care about that.
No one can say for sure what happens to people, while they are talking over the cellphone, or what will happen to them in the future. However, today it is clear that people who often use mobile phones are at risk. And worst of all, it concerns our children as well. Most parents would not even let their child sit too close to TV, but they think that the smart phones which they buy for their children, not just for communication, but on the purpose of utterly unnecessary functions - such as games, are absolutely safe.
A child’s brain is more prone to absorbing electromagnetic energy emitted by the cell phone than an adult’s one. Besides, children usually keep their phone closer to the ears than adults while talking, and many literally press it to the ear because it is soft, and allows them to do so. As a result, the child’s brain absorbs more energy emitted by the phone than the adult’s one.
According to many experts, the children who are using cell phones have various adverse changes in the structure of cells in their brain. This decreases attention, stimulates memory loss, causes sleeping disorders and anxiety, deterioration of mental abilities, susceptibility to epileptic reactions and stress.
Unfortunately, the researchers do not have any information about how much time a day people can use a cell phone, as well as which mode is best to do this. It is proposed to follow the standards that are now not only obsolete, but generally developed for use of other devices - such as a TV or a microwave.
Another problem is that children can use a mobile phone for other purposes. For example, to play games in the classroom, listen to music, or surf the Internet. Think of how much useless information such a young child can find in the World Wide Web.
In addition, children begin to communicate with friends via the mobile phone only, and then they start losing contact skills. Doctors, generally, do not recommend the use of “mobile phone” for children under 14 years.
Today, mobile phones provide a possibility to socialize 24 hours a day. Children usually send about 88 messages a day, and live under the constant influence of their friends. The Mirror (London, England) represents statistics of mobile phone usage among British people: “Mobile phone users sent 4.4 billion text messages last year which works out at 1,053 texts for every man, woman and child in the country. Figures from the Central Statistics Office show there are 4.4 million mobile phones in the country - 160,000 more than the population of 4.24 million. The total amount of time spent on landline and mobile phones in 2005 - which added up to 29,570 years or 15.5 billion minutes, with mobiles clocking up 10,875 years of talk”. The same situation is repeated in other countries.
They interact with the world around the clock, but mainly through the screen of the cell phone or a computer. Facing each other, they continue to write messages on the phone/ social networks. 70% of them check their smartphone every hour; many have a syndrome of phantom vibration in the pocket.
Cell phones limit the ability of the child to adapt and communicate. Today, children are often narrowed around the computer, internet, mobile; they have no need to go out. Besides, it results in the lack of experience of friendship. So, nowadays generation grows in the virtual world of innovative technologies and is cut off from the outside world.
Many mobile phone users, especially teenagers suffer from addiction to cell phones, especially for sending text messages. A recent survey by Kenton Research in the United States shows that 31% of Boston residents were willing to give up sex for a year than give up their mobile phones for the same period. It shows how people become addicted to mobile phones.
Another dangerous factor associated with the mobile phone is the using it while driving. Many accidents have been caused by the fact that someone is talking on the phone while driving. Nowadays, this is even considered a crime. One of the most hotly debated driver distractions of the last decade is the mobile phone. Regulation of mobile phone use while driving has been the subject of more than one hundred bills in thirty-seven U.S. states, none of which have passed. Internationally, at least thirteen countries (including Switzerland, Israel, Great Britain and Taiwan) have enacted legislation banning or restricting mobile phone use while driving.
One more problem of mobile phone usage is a high risk of robbery. If parents buy a pretty expensive toy for their kid, they should be wary of the fact that other children may want to posses the same. They may choose dishonest and even traumatic way of getting desired thing. Phone can be simply pulled out of the portfolio, or may be robbed using force that is more traumatic for children’s fragile psyche.
Different research works confirm that modern smartphones have a bad influence on the human’s creativity. Various tests of Torrance show that youth creativity was much higher some decades ago. Its dramatic collapse was observed in 1998. Modern society started the new century with no interest in anything - today teenagers spend hours communicating in social networks. A few years ago they did it on their computers, but with time cell phones turned into pocket computers, which gave teenagers an opportunity to spend even more time on the Internet. They do not have any interest in “face to face” communication, because they can message each other, meaning that they entered the era of degradation. This is actually what Einstein was worrying about, “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots”.
So, you still do not believe that you should not overuse the mobile phones? Well, it is only the own choice of everyone, no one can force someone to do something. However, people should also know that excessive use of mobile phones can provoke headaches, amnesia, insomnia, irritability and even chronic fatigue. The usage of mobile phone also increases the risk of cancer. Scientists have found that people who have regularly used mobiles for over ten years are twice as likely to get a malignant tumor on the side of the brain where they hold the handset. There are many other harmful effects of mobile phones, but all mentioned above are the most important ones. This is only a fact, but people can live without mobile phones. They should make such a decision if they want no to have problems with health. People should avoid long conversations and use the landlines for it, and do not carry a cell phone near the most important parts of the body. Mobile phones must be used wisely and purposefully, as prevention is always better than cure.
