Hand to hand or door to door with flyer distribution

A very commonly used form of marketing is flyer distribution. It has been around for years now, and while some might think that the internet makes it no longer needed or relevant, it still has a place, especially for small businesses and new ones. It is hard with all the costs involved to start a business today, and even hard to sustain it in those first few years. Essential to success is the small business advertising choices you make, but marketing takes investment. The great thing about flyers is that they take little capital to design and make and deliver. With the right audience, they can generate interest and customers which earn you the sales and growth you are looking for.

Taking flyer distribution door to door

Door to door distribution means exactly what you think. You hire some people to deliver your flyers from one house to another, in the area you have chosen to target. You know exactly how many you are delivering to so only need to print what you need so no extra costs on printing. There are many ways that the door to door distribution can happen. As mentioned, you can hire a company or some leaflet walkers to post them. The flyers are posted alone so they get more attention from the target. This does cost more though. Or you can take part in a shared distribution campaign so you share the costs of delivery as part of a group of flyers. Finally, you could have your flyer put in with the local newspaper. Again the newspaper may detract some attention as that is what most people look at first.

Handing out flyers to passersby

Another means of distribution is handing out to people on the street. You might have someone stand outside or close to the business and hand out flyers offering a special deal for the day for example if you are a pizza place, you might do a buy one get one free thing. There are other ways the distribution can happen other than handing it directly into the hands of the people walking past. You can also keep them somewhere prominent and let people take one if they are interested. You can also tuck them under people's wipers of parked cars. Care must be taken never to do damage in that last one. There are other less scrupulous options – a good example is people going to the roof on a nearby building and throwing them off onto people and the streets below.

Summary

The kind of flyer you have made, the method you use for delivery and where your target audience is all part of your small business advertising strategy and depends on your business and your budget. There are advantages and disadvantages to each, but with planning, you could have some real success.
