Things To Look For When Buying A Sunscreen

Buying sunscreen should be given a lot of thought. Why? Because protecting our skin from the sun’s harmful rays is a big matter and is an issue that should not be treated lightly. We are all aware of the adverse effect of staying under the sun for a long time without protection. Not just for vanity reason of having sun spots, premature aging of the skin, increased risk of fine lines and wrinkles but of the more serious hazards such as skin cancer, weaker immune system and even eye damage.

With all these threats, we should properly research the best sunscreen to use and not just buy the first one we see on a pharmacy’s shelf.

Consider the SPF

We all hear the abbreviation SPF when sunscreen is being talked about. SPF means sun protection factor. We all see sunscreen indicating a number of SPF. And for those who do not have any idea what it means, the SPF number indicates how long it would take for the sun’s UV rays to burn your skin. If you buy a sunscreen with SPF 20, it means it would take the sun 20 times longer to affect you compared to when you are not wearing any sunscreen. Ideally, the higher the SPF the better although what is more important is that the sunscreen provides broad spectrum protection to protect against UVA (long wave ultraviolet) and UVB (short wave ultraviolet) rays. Sunscreens with SPF 30 or higher are sufficient.

Is It Water Resistant?

If you are buying sunscreen not just for you but for the whole family including your children, make sure that it is water resistant, especially if you are buying one to be used during a family’s outing to the beach or to the pool. Although it is water resistant, the sunscreen could still be rinsed off and or sweated off so preferably, it should be reapplied.

Check The Ingredients And Read The Label

When we do our grocery shopping we tend to get swayed by products endorsed by our favorite celebrities or buy products from well-known brand. When buying sunscreen, we have to read the label first and make sure that the ingredients used are not harmful. Better yet, look for a kids natural sunscreen to make sure that you are not buying sunscreen that is toxic for your children.

Consider The Various Applications

Sunscreen comes in different applications and when you are buying one, you also have to consider which one would be more convenient for you. Creams are better suited for those with dry skin since it is moisturizing, especially if you would be using the sunscreen for your face. But for your body, choose sunscreen that comes as lotions since it is less slimy and sticky than cream. Sunscreen also comes in stick form which is easier to apply for those with squeamish and restless kids. Sunscreen could also be purchased in a spray form although this is more difficult to gauge if you are applying it evenly. There is also the risk of inhaling the spray which could pose a problem to younger kids.

These are just a few of the factors you have to consider when buying a sunscreen. If you are still unsure, it is recommended that you ask professional advice from your dermatologist.
