Being Prepared For Long Car Rides with Children

Heading off with children on a long car journey is no-one's idea of a peaceful and calm road trip, but sometimes it needs to happen! It is possible to help your kids enjoy the ride and have you stay sane during the process if you plan in advance. Here are some things to get ready, from an insulated bottle bag to activities that will keep them occupied.

Before you head off

First of all, make sure you get the car ready for the journey. Have it serviced and given a safety check and think about joining a local automobile club for roadside assistance during that time. When you plan the journey make sure to give yourself a lot of time, and a lot of breaks. Children need to use the bathroom, or just to get out of the car and stretch their legs now and then. Find a playground or two that they can let off some steam at, some places of interest to see along the way. Have some flexibility about the ride, when you get there and what happens along the way.

Snacks and drinks

So that the constant demand to stop for food and drinks does not drive you crazy be sure to pack some snacks and drinks in the car. You can have a cooler to keep it in, or they can have their own bags where they put their insulated water bottle 1 litre. For younger children you need a sippy cup that is non-spill, bottles in an insulated bottle bag and maybe a bottle warmer that can be plugged into the car's lighter. Have a range of snacks but think about how messy they are to eat, whether they might melt and such.

Overnight stop items should be accessible

Make sure the things you need for an overnight stay are easy to get to. If you are going to staying at a hotel or motel during the drive choose one that has options for the kids. A swimming pool, a games room, outdoor play equipment even. Have bags packed for each of you with sleepwear, clothes, wash items, favourite soft toy, insulated water bottle 1 litre, in case they need a drink in the night. If you have it all in smaller bags you do not have to root through larger suitcases to find what you need. Remember the small things like wipes, headache pills, a spare dummy, a plastic bag for dirty clothes and such.

Encourage naps

Put screens on the car to block out the sun and protect the children in the back. This also creates a darker environment that will allow them to nap through some of the journey. If your children sleep well in the car it might even be worth leaving early evening time so they sleep through the night and you get a good amount of traveling done.

Older Kids

Older children need different things to keep them happy. If they have a handheld device and phone be sure to bring them and a way to charge them. Get a good pair of noise-blocking headphones for them and let them play their favourite music. Bring spare batteries and consider having surprises along the trip for them to discover, small gifts or surprise short outings from the car.
