Tips and Tricks to Clean Mattress Stains

Keeping your mattress stained may grow bacteria and allergens and trigger unpleasant smell, especially with hot and humid weather. This becomes quite an issue when the stains are from urine.

Here are a few tips for cleaning the most common stains of mattress:

Clean urine stains from mattress

Urine, whether human or animal, leaves quite an offensive smell in the mattress. So, try to act when the stain is fresh.

Step 1: If the stain is wet, first blot it with kitchen paper as much as possible. Don’t press to avoid pushing the liquid even deeper.

Step 2: If the stain is already dry or you’ve already blotted the fresh stain, spray distilled white vinegar on top of the stain. Use spraying bottles (e.g. reuses the bottles from glass cleaning liquid), don’t pour the vinegar. If it is a very old or persistent stain – gently rub the vinegar with your fingers onto the stain.

Step 3: Let the vinegar stay on the stain for 10 minutes and make sure there is good ventilation in the premise where the mattress is. This will speed up the effect of the vinegar.

Step 4: Blot up the vinegar with kitchen paper. Press gently above the stain.

Step 5: Put some baking soda above the stain. If it’s in clumps, just break them into small pieces and let it stay for a 4-5 hours. The baking soda soaks up the vinegar, along with the unpleasant urine smell.

Step 6: Vacuum the soda from the mattress slowly and carefully.

Clean blood stains from mattress

Dry blood stains are generally difficult to remove completely, but the following method pretty much removes them thoroughly.

Mix 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide with 1 table spoon of liquid soap and 1 table spoon of salt. Spread a small part of this mixture over the stain and rub it into it. Let it dry and then remove the residue using a white rag soaked into hydrogen peroxide. The rag will color so shift the sides of the rag until the stain gets out. Do not use colored rags as the rag color will pass onto the mattress.

Clean vomit stains from mattress or other bodily liquids

To clean bodily liquid stains from mattress, take a white rag and blot the blemish with ammonia. Use household, unscented ammonia, do not dilute it. Make sure you don’t drench the mattress with the ammonia.

Then, use a clean cloth soaked into clean lukewarm water and wipe the ammonia. Spray with baking soda so the ammonia is taken out and its specific odour is neutralized. Make sure the premise is well ventilated and let the soda dry out, then vacuum the area carefully.

Old and stubborn mattress stains, or stains caused by huge spillage of liquids should be cleaned by professional mattress cleaning perth companies.
