How to Become a Butcher

This is a person, male or female, that has the job of preparing meat in some way for sale to the customer.  There are many reasons as to why someone wants to become a Perth butcher.  Most of the time it comes from the appreciation and love of fine meats but it can also be a very rewarding career.  It is a career that helps you improve your people skills by interacting with customers every day.  You can also be the one to suggest different meats that they may have not tried, helping them to broaden their food palate.

To become a Perth butcher you do not need any formal education or certification.  The reason is that becoming a butcher is considered a vocational trade.  Some butchers may choose to attend a culinary school to help them understand the many different ways that you can use various cuts of meat but this is not necessary.  Most have just a high school education and learn how to become a butcher at the chopping block, so to speak, by training with another butcher that knows their trade.

To become the best butcher Perth there are two different paths that you could take to accomplish this goal.

  • Apprenticeship program—this is the ideal path for people that know that they want to become a butcher and either open their own shop or work in the meat department of a grocery store.

  • On-the-job training—this path is for those that want to get a job immediately and start earning money.

There are also strengths and weaknesses when becoming a Perth butcher shop.  These areas can be worked on even before you start to work with meat.  Some of the things that you can work on can include, but not limited to:

  • Build up your muscles and endurance because as a butcher you are going to have to do a lot of heavy lifting. The animal carcasses can be massive. Also, you will be doing steady sawing and chopping so this will require a great deal of upper body strength.  If you can build up your strength, muscles, and endurance before starting work it will make it a lot easier.  It will also let you focus on learning the trade and you will not be so exhausted at the end of the day

  • Hand-eye coordination—a Perth butcher uses very sharp tools and when using them they move quickly. Having good hand-eye coordination will help prevent accidents although the tools used today are much safer than tools of the past.

  • Take the time to learn the theory and basics of butchery. There are books and videos that can help you learn about the different meats, how to make the best cuts and more.
