OVERVIEW

Head and neck cancer is cancer of the sinuses, nose, mouth or throat and originates in the squamous cells that line the mucosal surfaces inside the head and neck. Since the head and neck cancers begin with squamous cells, they are also referred to as squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck. Following are the types of head and neck cancer:

1. Oral Cavity: Head and neck cancer involves cancer of the oral cavity that consists of the hard palate of the mouth, two third of the tongue, gum that is backing the wisdom teeth, inner lining of the cheeks, the bottom surface of the mouth and the lips.


2. Pharynx: The throat or the pharynx is divided into three parts that are known as nasopharynx, oropharynx and hypopharynx. These three parts of the throat include the part behind the nose, the back of the mouth, the tonsils and the tongue as well.  


3. Larynx: Larynx is an air passage to the lungs that consists of our vocal cords and small pieces of tissues known as epiglottis that prevent food from entering into the air passage.


4. Paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity: The head and neck cancer includes the cancer of paranasal sinuses that are four pairs of air filled space that are present underneath the eyes, above the eyes, between the eyes and behind the eyes.


5. Salivary glands: Salivary glands are the ones that produce saliva from the ducts and play an important role in maintaining the oral health. There are mainly three types of salivary glands that are present in front of the ears, in the inferior of the tongue and below the jaw.

Causes of Head and Neck Cancer

Although there is no definite cause of head and neck cancer, following are some of the factors that can increase the possibility of a person to be diagnosed with head and neck cancer.

1. Increased exposure to ultraviolet radiations of sun 


2. Heavy alcoholic consumption


3. Consumption of betel quid


4. Poor oral health and hygiene


5. Exposure to any harmful radiations


6. Volatile vapours or pressurized gases that are inhaled at the workplace or at home.


7. Unhealthy or poor diet that can cause deficiency of vitamin A and B.


8. Weak immune system


9. Smoking and consumption of tobacco


10. Human Papillomavirus, an infection that arises from sexual activity and can lead to cancer.


11. Getting exposed to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)


12. Consumption of marijuana

Symptoms of Head and Neck Cancer:

The symptoms of head and neck cancer are different for different parts of head and neck and are as follows:
