A Historical Watch

The word sauna has its etymology from a Finnish root which refers to a traditional Finnish bath and also to its bathhouse. The Finnish bath, made by digging a pit in the ground. This was initially used as a dwelling or relaxing place during the winter and having a fireplace with stones that were heated to a particular temperature. Heating the rocks would raise the temperature, water is usually poured or thrown on the stones to generate steam, and this also gave a sensation of increased temperature. In such a scenario, it’s difficult to keep your clothes on, so individuals usually put on a towel or are completely unclad when in the sauna.

The first Finnish saunas are today referred to as smoke sauna. They are unique because heat is generated by burning a pile of rocks called Kiuas. These rocks are heated for about 6 to 8 hours before the smoke is let out. With proper heating, these rocks can release heat for about 12hours. The continuation in research works and study, saw the sauna evolved from the conventional smoke sauna to a metal wood stove which was connected to a chimney in generating heat. This was a welcomed development as it had dealt with the issue of the smoke perfectly.

This practice of the Finnish people would have remained with them, but factors such as migration and tourism led the Finnsmigrating to other parts of the world and also taking their sauna designs and traditions with them. This lead to global acceptance and development of varieties of saunas. After the Second World War, the Germans got to know about the Finnish sauna; they were built in their portable tent which today we could most likely refer to as the home sauna. These Germans also carried this newly found tradition back home.

With the level of technology and development at such a time, buying a home sauna to be installed was quite impossible as it had to be constructed. An infrared sauna could be envisaged. Modern saunas are known today to originate from Northern Europe. In Finland, a home sauna is found in almost every house, sometimes constructed as an outdoor sauna. The acceptance of sauna is seen in North American, Western Europe, Japanese Russian and south African public sports centres include sauna facilities.

The Guinness Book of World Records has it that the largest sauna is found in the Thermen and BadeweltSinsheim, Germany name the Koi Sauna. It measures about 166 square meters and can hold about 150 people. The evolution of the sauna did not only take place in Finland, but history has it that it also happened around d the same time in the Baltic countries having the same meaning and importance of sauna in daily life.
