Networking equipment maker Cisco has marketed various products, most of which are intended for switching in data centers. It also includes single-function servers as well as products and services that are intended for operating mission-critical business applications on networks.
Nexus 7000
First, Cisco unveiled the first components of a vital data center platform that is designed to support the demands of staged workloads and the virtual arrangement of technology resources.
The manufacturer has released the Nexus 7000 family of matrix switches (US $ 75,000) which are based on a unified matrix architecture. This architecture, which simultaneously carries Ethernet, IP, and data storage traffic, would eliminate the need for parallel storage and compute networks, thereby reducing the number of server interfaces required.
These expandable switches, with standardized input and output interfaces, can support 15 terabytes per second data switching. The speed of 10 gigabits per second, per Ethernet connection, could possibly be increased to 40 Gb / s and 100 Gb / s. They can also support possible interconnect modules according to the Fiber Channel over Ethernet ( FCoE ) protocol which is under development. The products in this range will be marketed in the second quarter of 2008.
For these switches, the first to be compatible with the Octobersec security architecture , Cisco introduced the Nexus operating system, or NX-OS, which would allow updates without downtime. NX-OS combines elements of the SAN-OS storage area network operating system, Layer 2 switching and Layer 3 routing protocols, and virtualization functions. The company also released Data Center Network Manager software, which will be used to manage Nexus 7000 switches within data center networks.
Power, transition, virtualization
Cisco has added support for the Enhanced Power Over Internet Protocol (ePoE) to the Catalyst Series 3750-E and 3560-E Series Switches, including support for IEEE 802.11n wireless access points, and Catalyst 2960 switches support the PoE power protocol. The Catalyst 3560-E series is also enhanced with a 12-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet model and a 12-port Gigabit Ethernet model with two 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports.
In the Catalyst 6500 series, Cisco will release the 16-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet module in the second quarter of 2008, which will double port density and reduce switch power consumption. The 6509-VE chassis (US $ 9,995), available now, has nine vertical modular slots and supports a maximum throughput of 80 Gbps.
The new Catalyst 4900M family switches (starting at US $ 22,000), with 2RU form factor enclosures, are designed for businesses migrating to 10 Gigabit Ethernet. They house modules that allow a combination of 40 Ethernet ports of 10, 100 or 1000 Mb / s or 10 Gb / s, or the operation of 24 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports. These switches support a maximum throughput of 320 Gb / s and the processing of 250 million packets per second.
In addition, Catalyst blade switches can use virtualization technology that can manage up to eight switches using a single logical switch.
Security and services
The manufacturer has also launched the line of expandable single-function ASA 5580 servers. Two models are firewalls, the model 5580-40 which supports two million simultaneous connections, 750,000 security rules and an expandable 10 Gb / s throughput. at 20 Gb / s, and the model 5580-20 which supports one million connections and a speed of 5 Gb / s.
The 5580-20 Remote Access Hub supports SSL or IPsec VPN connections for up to 10,000 concurrent users. Clustering multiple units allows maximum support for 100,000 concurrent users.
Cisco has also added elements to its application networking services offering, for operating mission-critical business applications under a service-oriented architecture.
It includes the ACE 4710 single-function server (from US $ 15,995) which is used for switching virtualized applications, the WAAS Mobile software solution for the acceleration of TCP protocol applications for mobile and remote workers on wide area networks, as well as a validation program for commercial software applications.
