Diablo 2's'lost' assets were not actually an issue for Diablo 2: Resurrected

"I must give props to Diablo 4 Gold Andre Abrahamian, an awesome designer at Blizzard working together with us," explained Gallerani, who works at Vicarious Visions, the Tony Hawk 1+2 developer that was recently turned into a full-time Blizzard support studio. "He went to people's desks only like,'Hey, do you have anything left over?' Not only did we get the codebase, but we have a good deal of the first assets. When you find the movie of Tyrael's wings in HD, they really are the original model from the original Tyrael's wings. I believe that is one of the few assets that we just took verbatim."

Gallerani stated they had other assets pulled from all sorts of sources. For example: 3D models of the Lut Gholein market stalls used for marketing stills. In the first Diablo two people were turned to 2D sprites, but Blizzard managed to recoup the 3D files. "Yes, data losses occur," Gallerani said. "I wasn't there just to know what exact things vanished. But we still have the code. I meanthe game still gets patched, right, even after all these years."

Blizzard rounded up all of that material before it started work on Diablo 2: Resurrected, but the original art assets really weren't vital since they remade"every single strength in the game," Fergusson said. Resurrected enables you to switch between the classic images, which are untouched, and a completely new 3D engine. The cutscenes are entirely remade as well.

"We went with,'What could their intention be if they had the instruments we have today?'" The code, more than the initial art assets, was vital for Diablo 2: Resurrected, and that thankfully was not lost. "If you dig in the code, there is Diablo 1 hint in there. There is a great deal to discover and a great deal of intricacies," said Fergusson. "That's what makes it have its own character. The notion that the old code works how it will means you have the game which you have. If we had been hoping to change engines and reestablish it and we did not have those intricacies of this old code, it would not feel exactly the same. We are really very thankful that we have what we have, because [gamers ] may have that authentic experience."

Even though Diablo II: Resurrected isn't trying to precisely replicate the original's look, the newly-announced remaster is making an impressive effort to coincide with a few elements. Watching a panel in BlizzCon today, I was thrilled to hear about how they dug up ancient Blizzard resources to recreate and even reuse from the remaster. My favorite titbit: the new Tyrael reuses the angelic wings from the true 3D version used to Buy Diablo 2 Resurrected Items make his 2D sprite from the first game.
