Features of Proximity Sensors That Make Them Perfect for Mechanical System Design

Proximity sensors are sensors that can detect a target object within a certain range without being in contact with it. There are generally two popular types of proximity sensors; inductive proximity sensors and capacitive type sensors.

Inductive proximity sensors are further grouped into two types; the Magnetic (reed switch) and the high-frequency oscillation type. Both of these sensors, and the capacitive sensors have their own unique characteristics that make them perfect for application in mechanical system design.

Features of Proximity Sensors

The detection distance for proximity sensors depends on the shielding methods and the area size of the metal. The type of target material is also an important factor in recommending the detection distance. For example wool is 30%, aluminum is between 30% and 40% and steel is roughly 70%.

High-frequency oscillation sensors can detect all metals. Their medium of operation is an electromagnetic field and can detect up to a distance of 70% of the value on the product specifications. Magnetic or reed switch sensors on the other hand only detect target objects within a distance of 4-50mm and the objects must be magnetically permeable.

Inductive proximity sensors don’t require any power source and this lowers their operating costs. They also have the lowest response times compared to all the other types of proximity sensors.

As for versatility, capacitive sensors take the crown. They can detect a target object within a distance of 0-40mm. They are able to sense lower dielectric materials which allows them sense a wide range of materials including plastic and glass. These sensors treat objects like an open capacitor which escalates their capacitance and this is what the connected evaluating circuit picks up. Because of their flexibility, capacitive proximity sensors are best for complex application.
