Tree Stump Removal Versus Stump Grinding

There are a number of good reasons for having tree stumps taken care of on your property. Issues with the roots might lead to damage, they do not look great, they attract various pests, and they can be unsafe in some cases. But if you know you need some land clearing or stump removal from the professionals what is the difference between removal or grinding?

Why tree stumps need removing

As mentioned there are some good reasons to get rid of the stumps but that should happen with careful planning and in the hands of the experts. Reasons to not leave your stumps in include;

  1. Unwanted new tree growth - When a stump is left it can lead to smaller trees growing around it and then these to be removed as well. If those are left too long they become harder to remove. These are also taking nutrients away from the rest of your garden causing other plants close by to wither and even die.

  2. Accidents and damage are possible - Children or even adults trip over them, you might mow too close to them and then damage your mower, and the roots if they do not die can damage nearby paths, structures and such.

  3. Disease and pests are more likely - Things like termites, ants, beetles love the stumps and then from there move into the home. It can also be a place where disease and fungi grow.

  4. Tree stumps are not that attractive - Especially when pests and other unwanted growths start-up around or on them.

Pros and Cons for grinding stumps

  • It is not very hard physical work

  • Good for the environment

  • No large hole that needs dealing with at the end

  • Leads to root decay

Pros and Cons for removing tree stumps

What is positive about tree stump removal?

  • You take out the stump completely and you get rid of the roots too

  • No health risks involved

  • It is easy to replant in that area once it is gone

Why you might not choose to remove

  • It takes a lot more time than grinding

  • Removing the stumps is a lot harder

  • It is not the most environmentally friendly option when chemicals are involved

  • There is a hole left behind that needs to be dealt with

Comparing the two options

Stump grinding as part of land clearing uses a stump grinder that mechanically grinds on the stump and turns it into sawdust or mulch. But the stump is still there, it is just ground down to a height you prefer, from a couple of cm above ground to around 30cm below. That means no hole left behind. With stump removal there is a hole but it is completely gone. There is no risk of rot or regrowth. Tree stump removal is very hard and also takes special tree service equipment to achieve, but generally it is the more costly option.
