Tech revolutionizing the process of getting a passport

Among the various pros that the era of digitization has brought us, the reduced procedure timings can be considered as among one of the most useful advantages in these busy times of ours. Services related to any passport activity has greatly reduced in their complexity. Be it getting your passport renewed or just getting a new one has become much easier than even just 5 years ago. Few digitization upgrades like online form filling, appointments being received the very moment forms are submitted have made the process less stressful

The passport Seva being a tech enthusiast government department now has a more organized way of dealing with passport appointments and also swifter decision times. Citizens can track their approved passport situations through SMS updates. Since 2012 they have undertaken online passport applications, with the passport portal receiving around 50000 applications daily.

Since India not being a completely digitized nation, officials had misgivings about how people with no internet connections could fill online forms.

The MEA hence decided to build common service centers which would serve as places where people could fill passport applications for a meager Rs.100 which in previous days could take up to 1000 through middlemen.

Further implementations of tech

Golok Kumar Simply, Principal Consultant and Head-Technology, Passport Seva, Ministry of External Affairs have said they're a few more projects they are working on which shall make passport verification a dream-like process.
Firstly, its integration with our Unique Identification Number or Aadhar.

They will serve to verify passports issuance directly through Aadhar. An applicant can also link the two with just mobile is also in works.
Secondly, the integration of passports to the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems. With the implementation of these two services, a time would come where verification will not even be a part of the process.
There also talks of the mPassport mobile app and Digi lockers for applicant documents, both of them serve to reduce police verification timings and also increase the security of the verification process for citizens.
