What are Dogs’ Tear Stains: Explained by an Ophthalmologist

Dog keepers frequently worry over the stubborn tear stains on their dogs that just won’t go away. They might try the various products but the stains would still be present.
There are numerous methods available to remedy the stains but not everything might help the dog.

A chemical compound named Porphyrin is more often than not, the cause of the red or brown stains, which contains iron, produced when the body leaks red blood cells through saliva, tears, feces, etc.
Every single dog creates porphyrin but some dogs do it much more than the other dogs.
But the porphyrin stains
are not visible unless the dog has white fur or other light-colored furs.

CAUSES
Stains form when the tears, instead of draining in the nasal cavity that takes away the tears, leak onto the face. This takes place in different ways.

When the medial palpebral is extra compact than usual, the center part of the eyelids folds inside. This blocks the nasal cavity for tear draining partially and tears leak down the face.
The lacrimal caruncle located in the eyes has very thin hair which when gets long, drain tears down the face.

When the skin in the eye’s lower surface forms a wide triangular trough, the tears flow down the face which is called medial canthal troughing.

Tear smudging can be reduced with a surgery called Canthoplasty. Cryotherapy is used to handle the lacrimal caruncle too but these aren’t recommended with most dogs.

TREATMENT
There are a number of ways of handling these shades in dogs, a few of them are :
The hair around the eyes should be kept as clipped as physically possible, so as to not let them get inside the eyes.
You should wash the face with a hot cloth and then make it dry. You can use various cleaning pads available too. Some contact lenses could be used if you want.

Many accessories claim that they can lessen the stainings as well but be careful in using them.
These blotches can get very messy if not treated properly so it is advised that you refer to a proper specialist of the eyes, to cancel out anything that isn’t visible to the naked eye.
