Microsoft's plan to put Dynamics 365 CRM/ERP on a twice-yearly update schedule

Under the new plan, Dynamics 365 An online update will begin starting this year so that its two major feature updates will arrive in April and October, essentially the same time frame that Windows 10 and Office 365 Pro Plus will also receive feature updates. Microsoft executives said the goal is to make these updates backward-compatible and as simple as possible, and all potentially disruptive new features will be disabled by default.

Additionally, Microsoft is expanding the ability of IT professionals to validate these updates in a sandbox environment, starting with the April 2019 update, officials said. And to help IT prepare for these updates, release notes will be released "months" before each update. For example, the release notes for the Dynamics 365 October 2018 update will be released on July 23 (during the Microsoft Business Application Summit).

There are no comments in a Microsoft blog post about the ability to postpone feature updates, which Windows 10 business users can do for a period of time. I asked about this, but so far not a word. Given today's blog post, this seems unlikely to happen, noting:

Since all customers will be upgraded according to the ongoing delivery schedule, your organization must upgrade to the latest version if you are using an older version of Dynamics 365.

Update (July 9): As expected, the response to postponement of feature updates is not twice a year. Full answer, provided by a spokesperson:

Our goal is to ensure that admins are able to test before enabling update features for their organization. With Dynamics 365 (online) updates starting April 2019, we will publish an updated schedule for customers in advance so that they can plan ahead and spend time validating in their sandbox environment. Then customers can schedule the upgrade in their production environment at their convenience within a set time frame. Outside of that window, the Updates automatically disables all major new user experience changes by default.

Microsoft officials said they informed Dynamics 365 Online CRM v8.1 users in May that anyone on v8.2 should plan to upgrade to the latest version by January 31, 2019. Dynamics 365 for Finance & Online Operations customers (ERP) running v 7.0, v7.1, v7.2 and v8.0 will be the latest version by March 31, 2019. Customers with unsatisfied extension requests will be able to use v v3 until April 30, 2020.

We will continue to fully support previous versions of Dynamics 365 applications until the times mentioned above. Publish those dates, we will only support the latest version generally available, the officials said.
