Making Roman Blinds

Roman blinds are a great choice in a window treatment. They hang like curtains from the top of the window frame down and at equal intervals, there are bars placed horizontally threaded into the back of the blind. A cord that runs through it is sewn from one end of the bars to another so when you pull it, it lifts the bars and creates pleating in the fabric as it raises the blinds. If you want the blinds to stay up, you have to secure the cord in that position, when you want to lower them again, the cord is released. As well as buying ready-made and custom made roman blinds you can also consider do it yourself blinds.

Why people choose Roman blinds

People select Roman blinds for a number of reasons. Sometimes it is their look, they are an attractive option as a window treatment. But when it comes to DIY roman blinds they are an easy enough project to take on. They are also very affordable with only a few materials needed and the result will fit the window perfectly and look great. You do not even have to invest curtain tracks as you can fit them to the frame using something affordable like Velcro.

How to make them yourself

  1. To make Roman blinds you will need the fabric of your choice and cut it so that you have an extra 5 cm on the width and 10cm on the length. Be sure to hem the material either by hand or with a sewing machine and use a thread that suits the colour of the material. You also need 5 thin rods measured and cut to the width of the blind.

  2. In the back of the blinds, you need to make five rod pockets. Take some material for the lining and cut it to the same width as the main material. Cut strips of lining material and create pockets from it. Stitch them onto the lining leaving one end of the pocket open and closing the other. This is so you can push the rods into the pockets.

  3. Check against the length of the window to make sure everything is the right length so far. At the top on the back, stitch the Velcro. Get a wooden rod for your do it yourself blinds and screw it above the window frame. Then stick Velcro along it.

  4. Take the 5 slim rods and to each end sew on a small ring about 2cm from the edge. You also need eyelet screws in the top curtain rod at each measurement. Measure the right length of the cord and thread it through the rings and attach it to the bottom rod. Tie-down the cords so you can reach and pull them to lower and lift the blind when it is up.

  5. Put a cord weight on the end or a large bead to finish it off and have it hang nicely. Put in a hook to the side of the window so you can wind it to hold it secure when needed. Now you have finished your DIY roman blinds.
