Looking Through the Lens

Science labs meant one thing for sure, looking through a microscope. Trying to look at a miniscule thing which is otherwise not visible. When you look down that lens onto a slide, you can’t help but marvel how something so tiny has so much detail in them. Observing a cell in an onion peel is something I am sure a lot of you have tried.

The person to thank for this invention is Robert Hooke. His idea to view cork cells underneath a magnifying lens is what got us here today. Our understanding of the human body, animals, plants and even microorganisms has increased manifold. Today we know a lot about cells, cell organelles, tissues, plant tissues, probiotic organisms, pathogens viruses etc. Looking into microorganisms has helped us leaps and bounds in evolving medicine. Fighting off various epidemics and creating vaccines to protect our future. Due to the microscope we have managed to increase the life expectancy of our population. We have made giant leaps for mankind with the help of one instrument.

A regular optical microscope has different models for students, scientists and other enthusiasts. The maximum magnification achieved depends on the lens attached to it. The microscope has 3 main parts to it – the lens, the stage, the light source. Most commonly used light source used is the sun. The light is directed using a mirror. However, newer microscopes are available with their own illumination source such as a lamp. The stage is where the sample is placed. The sample is usually placed on a glass slide. This is to prevent damage to the microscope. It also aids in improving the clarity of the image seen. The microscope contains 2 sets of lens to achieve the desired magnification. In this there are further two types: low power and high power.

As the name suggests high power gives greater magnification, it can be as high as 1000x. It is used when you want to observe a slide to great detail. Low power can give up to 10x. Low power microscope is rarely used in research, where high power is used. Low power can be used to observe relatively larger objects. Microscopes even have a camera attached to it to take images. They even have a screen for easy viewing.

A good microscope can be purchased from a brick and mortar store, or can be bought online.Buying online helps to look through various models and compare prices. There are various sites that help you get a greater look at everything.
