DIY Organic Bug Repellent Recipe

No matter how clean or well-designed a house is, or no matter how well-maintained your garden, kitchen, and yes, even your trash bins are, these pesky bugs will definitely find their way into your home one way or another. That’s why one of the most important items every homeowner must have is a bug repellent.

If you have a trusty bug repellent, you’re in for a happy, healthy home life. You get to protect yourself and your children from bites and diseases. You preserve the quality of your food and raw ingredients. And, as you may already know, a home that looks and smells good is homier than ever.

You already know about bug repellents you can buy at the supermarket or convenience store. But have you heard about organic bug repellent? That’s right, you can totally DIY your natural bug repellent. Here are a few recipes you want to check out:

First of all, why should you go natural?

With the plethora of recipes online and the availability of ingredients at supermarkets down to farmers markets or online selling platforms, it’s becoming easier and easier to choose the DIY option when thinking about bug repellents, cleaning agents, air fresheners, and more.

Going natural helps you and your family avoid the undesirable effects of using products that have a high volume of chemicals in them. Plus, those products come with a ton of other issues. By buying these products, you also face the problem of plastic waste. Nature, on the other hand, is a great teacher; we only need to look to nature to find everything we need.

Recipes for your skin

You can actually make your own alternative to your best bug repellent lotion yet. Just make sure that the ingredients you use are great for topical application. Try these recipes.

Oil of lemon eucalyptus or lavender essential oil mosquito repellent

Not only are oils excellent in repelling mosquitoes; they smell incredible as well. This recipe is a bug repellent and aromatherapy all rolled into one.

You will need:

- A glass spray bottle

- Oil of lemon eucalyptus or lavender essential oil

- Witch hazel

Mix 1 part of either type of oil with ten parts of witch hazel into the glass spray bottle. If your spray bottle is quite large or you want to increase the volume of this organic bug repellent, just remember that the ratio of oil drops to witch hazel is 1:10. After that, shake, and then apply onto your skin. It’s that easy!

Vinegar insect repellent

Nearly every household in the world has caught wind about the power of vinegar. It can add a savoury sourness to your food. It’s great for making sauces. It’s an incredible wound disinfectant (though it could hurt like hell!) It can remove mildew off of your shelves, cabinets, walls – nearly every surface in your home. It’s an essential ingredient for removing dust. So you shouldn’t really be surprised to know that vinegar can also be used as an insect repellent.

Warning: it’s not going to smell too pleasant, although the smell disappears later. If you need a serious repellent like when you’re about to go camping, this is your best bet.

You will need:

- A 32-ounce bottle of apple cider vinegar

- 2 tablespoons of dried sage

- 2 tablespoons of rosemary

- 2 tablespoons of thyme

- 2 tablespoons of lavender

- 2 tablespoons of mint

- Jar with an airtight lid

Put all these ingredients in a jar and seal tightly. Shake well once a day for two or three weeks. After that, strain the herbs out and store the liquid in a separate container. Before you apply it onto your skin, dilute it with some water first, and place that mixture in a spray bottle. Pack it in your backpack and head straight for your bug-free adventure!

Recipe for your home or yard

If you want to convert completely to the organic life, say bye to those chemically infused bug sprays and try out this recipes. You can use this either indoors or outdoors.

You will need:

A glass spray bottle

Lavendar essential oil

Oil of lemon eucalyptus

Citronella essential oil

Water

White vinegar

Mix around ten to twenty drops of each oil and add two ounces each of water and vinegar. After that, shake and spray. Spray these onto surfaces and enjoy the rich and calming aroma of essential oils!
