Diving into what we know of Nolan’s Tenet as the release date gets further delayed
Every year, movie fans and the media industry list their most-awaited movies through various social media platforms. It has become a staple in the cinephile world. If you would go through the trouble of reading all these lists, you’ll find that one movie is common in all of them for 2020. And that is Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. This highly-anticipated, big-budgeted project was scheduled to be released on July 17. But as the world stopped, the makers first shifted the date to July 31, before postponing it to August 12.
So, as the wait is dragged on by this unprecedented pandemic, let’s look at what the movie has to offer-
A glance at the star cast and the anticipation seems well deserved.
As if Christopher Nolan wasn’t enough, the movie is packed with other reasons to be excited about for fans. Nolan brings together a splendid cast composed of BlackKklansman star John D. Washington as literally the ‘Protagonist’ (Yes, that’s his character’s name). We see the future-Batman Robert Pattinson as Neil, an agent of the secret organization that Protagonist joins. Kenneth Branagh is seen as the main antagonist, a Russian ‘psychic’, who is in an estranged marriage with Elizabeth Debicki’s character. Other cast members are actors from around the globe including Bollywood’s Denzil Smith and Dimple Kapadia. Michael Caine, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, Himesh Patel, Martin Donovan, and Sean Avery are also there but what they play is unclear from the limited media and marketing of the movie.
Some of these cast members have worked with Christopher Nolan before, like the legendary Michael Caine. (Batman Trilogy, Dunkirk) and Branagh(Dunkirk) but others are new to the director’s ambiguous universe. It will be interesting to see the coming together of such diverse talents.
The Mystery remains intact
Very little is known about the characters or the plot-line of the movie. An interview here and thereby one of the cast members was the only source of inside scoop, which wasn’t scooped. Like Robert Pattinson gave us a sneak peek when he talked about how personal and genuine Chris Nolan’s cinema is. The Twilight star locked himself up in a room to read the script and whatever little doubt he had about such a big project again, vanished into thin air. The story was deeply moving and surreal, something we all love Nolan for, as per Robert.

It was recently reported that Christopher Nolan bans chairs on his sets. News that the spokesperson for the Inception-maker completely denied. Following comments made by Dark Knight Trilogy Star Anne Hathaway, on how Chris bans the chairs, the spokesperson for the director made out a statement clarifying Anne’s comments. The statement said, in jest, that the only things banned from the sets of Nolan’s films are “cell phones (not always successfully) and smoking (very successfully).” And the chair thing is for Nolan himself because he doesn’t like the hurdled chairs right behind the cameras, which are more so a gimmick than a requirement.
And it makes sense since the director’s job requires a lot of movement, sitting down will affect the pace. But the cast and crew can sit wherever they want, whenever they want, the statement clarified.
The movie has a behemoth budget
Tenet is a $200 million movie, and Chris Nolan is famous for making ridiculously costly but historically relevant cinema. This is a trade-off that fans and critics alike have signed off on since the complexity and nuance in the Dark Knight Trilogy ‘broke everyone’s brains’. The movie has as of yet been scheduled for a release next month, but it doesn’t seem likely to happen. Another postponement might be in the making for Tenet. In any case, the makers of the movie have stated clearly that they do not want to release it directly to streaming platforms and a theatrical release is their preferred way to go.
