The telecommunications engineering sector is one of those with the highest occupancy rate. The majority of these engineers, 88.3%, have a job and 80% of them work with an indefinite contract. Of the 7.6% who are unemployed, only 1.4% are looking for their first job.

These are some of the conclusions drawn from the report «The Telecommunications Engineer: socio-professional profile», which analyzes the profile of students and professionals in the sector in Spain. The study has been presented by the Official Association and the Spanish Association of Telecommunications Engineers and has been carried out in collaboration with IDC Research Spain.

The data reveal that the profession is still primarily male (84.6% engineers versus 15.4% engineers), although this trend seems to begin to moderate with the new generations of students. In addition, it is a group that has a high educational level: 7% are doctors in engineering and 33% have postgraduate degrees.

The average remuneration of a telecommunication engineer is 49,206 euros per year. The Telecommunication engineer salary increases between those who have a master's degree or more than one foreign language and drops to 25,730 euros among engineers with less than five years of experience.

On the other hand, 39.3% of professionals and 68% of students of this engineering would like to work outside of Spain, especially in the United States, England, Germany, and the Nordic countries. 73.5% of engineers say they speak English, a fundamental skill since unemployment increases among those who do not master a foreign language or do not have other complementary training.

According to the study, among young students, there is a greater tendency to entrepreneurship since 25% of students say they want to work on their own projects. However, only 9.8% of engineers have set up their own company.
