That ride comes to an end as PSO2 leaves status

SEGA continued the franchise with cheap PSO2 Meseta a focus on multiplayer in the shape of Phantasy Star Online, an action RPG. The first and second installments of the series established on the SEGA Dreamcast and were released on the Gamecube and Xbox.

SEGA made sure not to leave out PC gamers by releasing Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst, which was a port of the first and second games in the series. Last, a title found its way to the Nintendo DS branded Phantasy Star Zero that functioned as a vague sequel to the past games in the series.

As the franchise took the leap towards the next generation of consoles, it began to favor greater action-oriented gameplay, which had been evident in Phantasy Star Universe -- a title that found its home on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 2. The game would be succeeded by two sequels called 2, both of which have been PlayStation Portable exclusives and Phantasy Star Portable 1.

That ride comes to an end as PSO2 leaves status and launches on Xbox One. But when can PC players jump in? Well, the release date has been shown by Sega, however it includes some disappointing news.

Only on the Microsoft Store. All those headlines you may have seen about the game launch on Steam when it strikes PC have been rendered nothing more than hopeful rumors. The fantastic news is that cross-play involving Xbox One and PC players will be empowered the instant it goes on the Microsoft Store.

"Phantasy Star Online 2 altered the background of Online Action RPG's; the sci-fi story, characters, and gameplay has resonated with gamers worldwide and today we are eager to bring North American players this special game -- free of charge. Our participant community is the heart and soul of this game and we couldn't have done it without their continuing support and enthusiasm."

This expands the free to play RPG to a far wider audience and I am thankful for that, but its presence on Steam will be sorely missed. Sega is being vague about the details at this time, but I suspect it will land on Valve's PC platform following a year-long exclusivity period (at most) on Microsoft's platforms. At which point we must also see PSO2 fall on PlayStation 4 and PSO2 Meseta for sale possibly Nintendo's Shift as a cloud-based name.
